Description:
A fine and rare hand carved European ivory table screen wonderfully carved in the round, c. 1900. An intriguing drama unfolds in a verdant courtyard with mountains and minarets in the distance. In the foreground a young couple evades a javelin in flight thrown by a male in robes standing on a parapet background left. Another couple middleground right warns of the danger. Undercutting emphasizes the 3-dimensional quality of this screen and when backlit, the screen appears as a lithophane. Presented in an ebonized hand carved wooden frame with ivory fretwork.
